Raster!

2010-09-06

I have a problem with the halftone patterns that appear everywhere: They are not made “correctly”. (I will write about this…)

Here are some examples on how different halftone patterns can look when applied to an image:

Natural dyes

2010-09-04

I have started eperimenting with natural dyes to be used in a CD cover art project. The first one of vegetable dyes is bilberry juice (Vaccinium myrtillus, maybe you know it as mustikka or blueberry). It seems quite versatile!

Bilberry juice test prints on yellowish non-acid-free cardboard. I used a screen from a previous project.

I knew from beforehand that the color of the juice depends on pH. When I handle the berries without breaking them, I get a bluish shade onto my fingers. But if I manage to break some of the berries, releasing the acidic juice, the shade tends towards red. And when I wash the bucket that I use to collect them, there is a shift from red to blue as the residual juice is diluted and pH approaches neutral. So I tried screen printing with both plain bilberry juice and with bilberry juice mixed with plenty of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3) that raises the pH to around 8. I also tried heat-treating the dry print in the oven, until there was a change in the shade, and ultraviolet ligth (UV) irradiation for 6 hours. See the above picture for results. I think there is quite a nice selection of colors achievable by different treatments! Plain juice gives a bluish-purple shade, and sodium bicarbonate shifts the color towards cyan. Heat treating gives a caramel color, but with the added sodium bicarbonate, heat treating gives a greenish brown “darkened leaf” shade. The colors seem quite UV-resistant, unlike the cardboard, which yellows a bit.

Printing was done without any resist, so I will press more juice from last year’s bilberries and add some resist. Hopefully the print will then have sharper edges.

For this experiment, I let 0.5 dL of the juice boil briefly, added 5 ml of potato starch, let boil briefly again, cooled down, and optionally added 1 ml of NaHCO3. The results:

Test prints with bilberry on grayish white cardboard

Either it was the boiling or the method of juice extraction that made the least treated test print more red than before. Potato starch seems to work quite well to make a nice printing paste. The burned colors each seem to match their unburned counterpart  to make a nice color scheme. Now I’ll just have to pick with, or without, NaHCO3, for the CD cover art project. I’ll go with.

OK. Don't add all baking soda at once! Sodium bicarbonate reacts with the acids in the juice to produce CO2. Also, by gradually adding more, one could adjust the shade. This went a bit too far from blue to cyan. It may not be a good idea to keep boiling after adding sodium bicarbonate, because it will convert to sodium carbonate that causes pH to go to around 11.

Filtering out the inevitable gooey starch lumps. This stuff tastes a bit sweet, bilberry-ish and has a dominating baking soda flavor...

For the CD cases, we want to use natural materials, and recycled materials, and to have them hand made so that there is added value to the purchase of a CD.

Material for CD covers, old office supplies. The Mercantil file pile on the right is enough for about 35 covers.

The image to be printed. The resolution of the image is 254 dpi. Width of the dark rectangle is (2.5 + 135 + 3 + 135 + 2.5) mm and height is (2.5 + 135 + 2.5) mm. First the image is transferred onto a silk screen using photo resist and ultraviolet light. I used an exposure time of 1 hour, which was too little as I had to keep the large screen at quite a distance from the UV lamp. Parts of the photoresist peeled off, and I had to fix those spots of the screen by painting photoresist with a paint brush.

Silk screen print on discarded office supplies. Yes, this was printed with that dark goo, and heat treated. It has a pleasant burned sugar smell.

Text for the cover, at 254 dpi.

I could not reach the other guys for comment on the title etc. yet. But I will try out the above anyhow. The way I did the script was by first writing by hand, taking a photo of the writing and then following the traces in Inkscape using the calligraphic pen tool, with a width of 15 and a mass setting of 11. The procedure to make the wavy background was slightly complicated, and I will probably write another article about it, as the process gives such nice results. I first tried without the background but thought it looked too empty.

2010-09-06

Two ink layers, or actually three. The text (not the waves) is double-printed so it is a bit darker than how it will probably be in the final mass-produced version. Also there is a slight misalignment between the two inks because of the double print.

Next up: surprise webcap (Cortinarius semisanguineus, verihelttaseitikki). It is a very common mushroom in Finland, but only yesterday did I learn to recognize it. I collected a bagful, and cooked it to extract juice, which I then boiled to concentrate it.

A potfull of colorful Cortinarius semisanguineus mushrooms

Fake antique?

After tinting, there’s more of a feeling of holding a treasure in your hands… :) Also the color of the bilberry ink got shifted away from cyan to dark blue, which is a good thing. The mushroom juice may be slightly acidic, or the shift may be simply due to color mixing.

Roasted! Just fooling around, but I kind of like it! Perhaps I will try again and roast the text and waves properly and then the trees only slightly.

Tricks of light. There's kind of an emboss effect from the thick, charred ink layer.

Dreadlock tool

2009/11/23

When I had my dreadlocks made, I had little idea how to take care of them. I tried different things. By now, I have a routine. I wash the dreadlocks with water every morning and after sports. Once a week, I wash them with hand dish washing liquid, twice at a time, and make sure there will be no residual dish washing liquid in my hair at the end. Additionally, I spend on average maybe 10 minutes a day fixing them using a tool that I devised:

dreadtool8

The tool is simply a metal wire loop with a handle. It works like this:

you push the loop through a dread near its root, stuff any loose hair that you think "belongs" to that dread into the loop, and pull the loop and the hair through the dread. If the loose hair sticks out from the other side of the dread, you continue working towards the tip of the dread in a zigzag fashion. When you push the loop through the dread, make sure it comes out at the same spot as does the loose hair, so that you won't be leaving funny loops of hair on the surface of the dread.

1) Push the loop through a dread near its root, stuff any loose hair that you think "belongs" to that dread into the loop, and pull the loop and the hair through the dread. 2) & 3) If the loose hair sticks out from the other side of the dread, you continue working towards the tip of the dread in a zigzag fashion.

The above cartoon misses a couple of important points: When you push the loop through the dread, make sure it comes out at the same spot as does the loose hair, so that you won’t be leaving funny loops of hair on the surface of the dread. Also, hold on to the end of the bunch of loose hair with fingers, while you are pulling the tool through the dread. It takes a bit of force to pull the hairs from your grasp, resulting in a tighter weave.

Instructions for building the dread tool

Go to your local guitar store and ask for the thickest electric guitar string that they have that is a simple metal wire, not a wound string. You can tell them you will use it as metal wire for non-musical purposes. If you have access to stainless MIG welding wire, that will also do. Normal iron wire is too soft, don’t waste your time with it. Guitar string that I have used were 0.4 mm (26 gauge) and 0.56 mm.

Cut a 20 cm piece of the wire. Fold it like this:

dreadtool1

It should look like this when the two ends are held together:

dreadtool2

Tie a cotton string to it:

dreadtool3

The cotton string will form a handle on the straight parts of the wire ends. Cut off the loose end and wind the cotton string around the straight part of one end of the wire, then continue winding it around the other, so that the two are pulled together.

dreadtool4

Hide the protruding wire tips by flattening the small hooks at the tips using pliers. Apply some super glue on the wound part of the cotton string, and wind the cotton string around the whole handle:

dreadtool5

Quickly apply another layer of super glue, wrap the string once more around the handle, and squeeze the handle with pliers to flatten it. This will be of help when you use the tool as you will know its orientation by touch alone.

dreadtool6

Apply super glue once more on the shaped handle. When the glue is dry, cut off the excess cotton string. Now the tool should look like this:

dreadtool7

Apply some contact glue on the handle, and fit a piece of heat-shrink tube on it, making a nice rubber-coated handle:

dreadtool9

Now the tool is ready.

Screen printing 2

2008/12/01

My second screen printing project.

scr1

I found some burgundy bedsheets on sale in Anttila, and made a blanket cover from them for my mmmmmm-so-warm camel hair blanket from Lidl. (Thanks to Tiina for helping out with sewing!) I started to think that a subtle silvery plant pattern along the sides would make the blanket ever more nicer. So here is that process.

By the way, I wish I would have done the printing before sewing. Would have been so much easier, especially with the corners.

I drew the plant pattern by hand, scanned it, edited it to black/white and printed on paper. Then the pattern was copied onto two transparencies by a photocopier. These were glued together (to make the black REALLY black) and a printing screen with photo emulsion spread on it was exposed through the transparencies by ultraviolet light.

scr2

Because the pattern was repeating, I needed to devise some sort of a guide to align the endpoint of the previously printed piece of the pattern with the start point of the pattern on the screen. I used whatever I had lying around. The fabric was fixed in place onto this piece of wood using a metal clip. The pattern endpoint was always positioned in the same spot on the piece of wood. This was done by positioning a “key leaf” in the pattern to the end of the planc (X axis) and by centering the pattern endpoint (Y axis).

scr3

Wooden guides were attached to the screen, seen here from the bottom side. This way the piece of wood (with the fabric on it) could always be positioned in the same place under the screen.

This is the crappiest screen I’ll ever make! LOL! I found the frame in someone’s trash. I experimented with some sprayable photo-sensitive laquer. But turned out it had a natural repulsion towards silk… So I washed the screen again and spread the blue photo emulsion on it. I was feeling cheap, so I used silicone on most of the area. A few leaks were detected in initial testing, so these were fixed by adding more emulsion and more silicone… Yuck.

scr4

Here is the screen upside down with the piece of wood in correct position. Only the fabric is missing. And it’s upside down… The four screws on the piece of wood lift it up so that it won’t rest on the metal clip alone.

scr5

Here the fabric is fixed onto the piece of wood, right after printing. The wood is inside the two-layer blanket cover, so the backside did not get printed on. The discontinuity is somewhere within the metal part. The pattern was designed so that a slight misalignment is undetectable.

The emulsion dries almost instantly with the cotton fibers sucking away the moisture so I was able to work as fast as I could without worrying too much about dirtying clean parts of the fabric. A slower working speed would have given better pattern piece transitions however, because the screen seemed to somehow smear the ending of the previous pattern. But I did not want to risk the emulsion solidifying onto the screen!

Oh how much easier this would be with a rolling stamp!

scr6

A messy job, but I managed. A rubber tool (on the right) was used to spread the mixture containing: opaque printing emulsion, aluminum flakes, blue pigment and a tiny bit of white printing emulsion. I used the pigment and the white emulsion because I was not perfectly happy with the color created by the flakes alone. Two sweeps gave a deep penetration onto the fabric.

scr7

After drying, the pattern was ironed to fix it. Notice how it is not as blue as you would expect from the previous picture. This is because there is only a very thin layer of the emulsion on top of the brightly reflecting aluminum flakes. But it is the way I wanted it. I found in initial testing that the fixed pattern will not fade in the washing machine – good. (P.S. Well, actually after a year of use there’s hardly any flakes left, but the pigment stayed, so the pattern is still visible)

scr8

Individual aluminum flakes on the cellulose fibers of cotton, seen through a microscope. They appear loose, but they are in fact glued to the fabric by the printing emulsion. Because most of the fibers ares not covered by the flakes, the “silver” won’t appear as bright as it could was all the surface reflective.

The largest particles are about 0.1 mm in diameter while the silk screen holes are about 0.2 mm x 0.2 mm, so things work A-OK. These kind of aluminum flakes might be sold as “100 Mesh”, I guess.

scr9

The finished product. I’m happy with it!

2009/09/01.

The aluminum flakes are gone by now, in loundry I suppose. It still looks nice though, because of the added blue pigment.

Dye Mixer v1.1 (java)

2006/08/10

[APPLET HERE]

Introduction

Hello, fellow dyer!

If the Dye Mixer won’t start within a couple of minutes, your browser probably doesn’t support Java and you need Java plug-in 1.1 (or later) for your WWW browser. You may need to restart the browser after installation.

screenshot
Screenshot

The basic idea of the Dye Mixer is to let you to try out various dye combinations on various canvases under various lighting conditions, in “virtual reality”, with only virtual fabric and dye wasted. :-)

Instructions

Here are descriptions of the different parts of the Dye Mixer user interface:

  • You can alter the virtual lighting conditions by choosing the appropriate Illuminant. Objects appear a different color under different illuminants, so make a choice similar to what you have where your work will be viewed in.
  • Illuminant Swatch shows the appearance of the illuminantion on a truly white surface. Each Swatch shows its CIE xy color coordinates.
  • Checking Illuminant White adapt makes the illumination appear the same color as the white on your computer screen, to which your vision has adapted to. This will make subjective color evaluation easier. However, if you want to compare absolute colors by holding an object against the computer screen, you should uncheck Illuminant White adapt.
  • Before proceeding to dyes, you must choose the Canvas. Dyes appear different color on different canvases.
  • Canvas Swatch shows the appearance of the canvas in the chosen illumination.
  • Checking Canvas White adapt makes the canvas appear the same color as the white on your computer screen. This may be useful if you have a large canvas, to which your vision adapts, and a small dyed area, and you want to see how the dyed area appears in the context of its surroundings. To view absolute colors, uncheck Canvas White adapt.
  • Checking Canvas Brightness adapt increases the amount of light the canvas is exposed to, but does not interfere with the absolute tone of color. Canvas Brightness adapt has no effect if Canvas White adapt is enabled.
  • The Dye Mixer allows mixing 8 dyes simultaneously. For each dye:
    • Choose the Dye you want to use. Note that the Dye Mixer is ignorant of the chemical compatibility of different dyes and canvases.
    • Checking Mix will include the dye in the combined mixture of dyes.
    • Amount of dye can be changed either by operating the slider, or numerically. The actual amount or concentration of dye required for the same effect in the laboratory can be direcly proportional to the Amount value. (I’d love to hear your experiments on this!) The proportionality coefficient you must use is different for different dyes and canvases.
    • Swatch shows the dyed canvas.
  • Mixed swatch shows the canvas dyed with all the selected dyes.
  • Checking Mixed swatch Brightness adapt increases the amount of light the dyed canvas is exposed to, but does not interfere with the absolute tone of color.

Here are some typical uses for the Dye Mixer:

  • You have a color in the back of your mind and wish to find a dye combination to realize it. Set your computer screen white balance so that it matches the white balance in the space you are in, or just let your eyes adjust to the monitor white balance. Enable Illuminant White adapt. Choose the Canvas and Illuminant as close as possible to what your work will be showed using. Try different dye amounts and combinations until you get an acceptable result. Just to be sure, write down what you are using. Try to use dyes sparingly! In actual reality, for each of the dyes you use in the mix, dye a swatch and see if it gets the same tone of color as the Dye Swatch in the Dye Mixer. Adjust the amount of dye until you have a matching result (see below for matching instructions).
  • You want to compare the color of a real-life object to a color produced by the Dye Mixer. Adjust the white balance of your computer screen to 6500 K. Choose an illuminant as close as possible to what you have in the space you are in. Disable white adaptations in the Dye Mixer. Adjust the computer screen contrast and the amout of lighting in your room so that the Dye Mixer’s swatch has the same brightness as the object. Compare the colors between the Dye Mixer’s swatch and the object.

Happy mixing!

Version history

This is version 1.1 of the Dye Mixer. Some of the older versions are available. The evolution of the Dye Mixer has been as follows (read from bottom to top):

1.1 Plenty of illuminant, canvas and dye data has been added. Most of the data is now in a separate text file, allowing adding new data without recompilation, or updating the Dye Mixer version. The biggest improvement, however, is that now the Dye Mixer is Java 1.1 compatible! This is good because Sun’s license for Java 1.2 (used in the Dye Mixer 1.0) and greater is, for some users and browser vendors, unacceptably restrictive. There has been some changes in the scalings of dye amounts – sorry about that if you wrote down some formulas. You can convert the 1.0 amounts to 1.1 notation by a simple calculation.
1.0 Added sliders and some minor things; improved much on ease of use.
0.9 Initial version.

Technical details

The jar package of the applet is made available for download.

The operation of Dye Mixer is spectrum-based. So, adding a new light source, canvas or dye will require measuring the spectrum. I will be happy to add a new dye (or light, or canvas) if you can provide me with its spectrum and as much information of the dye as possible. If you are unable to locate a spectrophotometer, you could also send me a sample of the dye.

The Procion MX dye absorbance spectra were measured with a spectrophotometer from 350 nm to 800 nm at 5 nm steps, using concentrations that kept absorbance under 1.0, with distilled water as solvent. The canvas reflectance spectra were measured with my own mirror apparatus combined with a spectrophotometer, using a tissue paper as white reference. The theoretical light spectra are computed by Dye Mixer and the rest of the spectra were obtained from various sources.

A simple absorbance model is used with the dyes: The absorbance spectrum of a dye is multiplied by the amount value. This is analogous to increasing the thickness, or concentration, of the dye layer. The model is unable to handle fluorescent materials and dyes.

The CIE XYZ tristimulus coordinates are calculated from the obtained light spectrum and further converted into sRGB for viewing. Java XYZ to sRGB conversion uses CIE D50 instead of CIE D65, so I coded my own according to the sRGB standard. sRGB uses the CIE D65 reference illuminant white point, so you should adjust your monitor and your room lighting to 6500 K color temperature, if you want to view absolute colors and compare samples directly against the picture on the monitor. Normally you should, however, resort to subjective comparison, using the screen white as the white reference for the virtual sample, and the room lighting (as reflected from white walls, paper) as the white referene for the actual sample.

A bit of background

I got interested in textile dyes after I bought a tie-dye T-shirt at Berkeley, California, which I visited during a “business trip” in spring 2001. I loved the place for it atmosphere, too. I grew fond of colorful hippie clothes, and wanted more. I could not find any locally (in Finland, they hardly even sell T-shirts during winter). The consequence was that I ordered, together with my mother Hanna (I didn’t have a credit card) some Procion MX dyes from Quilt und Art, Germany, to dye my own clothes.

Since, I have dyed tens of T-shirts and some other items. Most have been bought by my friends, for small fees certainly not to be of any interest to tax officials… :-)
